Oxford Hockey Club's U16 girls' team claimed the prestigious title of National Champions at the Nottingham Hockey Centre on Saturday, April 13th, 2024. In a thrilling match, the Oxford team triumphed over strong opponents, Timperley Hockey Club, with a final score of 4-3.
The win capped a remarkable journey of success in the competition. There were impressive victories on the road at previous finalists Stourport and Wimbledon as well as strong performances in the earlier rounds against Eastcote, Bedford, Towcester and Old Cranleighans.
In a highly anticipated final Oxford took a crucial early lead with Florence Hulcup scoring from a well worked penalty corner after 5 minutes. Matilda Amor doubled the lead for Oxford on 15 minutes with a superb breakaway goal. Shortly after Oxford’s second goal Timperley began to work their way back into the game, pulling a goal back mid-way through the first half, making the score 2-1 at half time.
With a change of formation, Timperley started the second half well, securing an equaliser on 45 minutes. Oxford hit back to make the score 3-2 on 50 minutes, with a goal from Beatrice Subeska-Renato. During the final stages of the game Timperley ramped up the pressure on the Oxford goal and secured a dramatic equaliser in the last few minutes, to make the score 3-3.
However, it was a defining moment of the team’s determination that secured Oxford's dramatic win. Following the equaliser, Oxford's Molly Deakin seized the opportunity from the restart, driving straight to the opposition goal, earning a crucial penalty corner. With the pressure mounting and the clock ticking down, Oxford capitalised with Hattie Gibson scoring a dramatic goal to make it 4-3. As soon as the ball crossed the line, the umpire’s whistle called time which confirmed Oxford were Champions!
